pk-china-user The main carriageway of the Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR) has reached 99 percent completion, Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Salman Ghani said on Tuesday.
During an inspection of the project, Ghani directed the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) to accelerate the completion of the remaining works, including drainage systems, retaining walls and interchange ramps.
The 38.3-kilometre access-controlled road connects Baanth on National Highway N-5 with Thalian on the M-2 Motorway. The project is aimed at diverting heavy and intercity traffic away from congested parts of Rawalpindi while improving regional passenger and freight connectivity.
A more direct connection with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) network is also being considered as part of a proposed second phase.
The National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) has assessed options for extending the road link from Thalian towards Hakla, where the Hakla-D.I. Khan Motorway forms part of the CPEC route. However, the proposed alignment has yet to receive final approval from the government.
Ghani also reviewed plans to introduce a Single Network Tolling System on the Ring Road.
