In an effort to improve water supply management in Gwadar, the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) on Wednesday unveiled a new administrative structure, dividing the port city into two zones and creating a dedicated water section within the authority.
The initiative, introduced under the direction of GDA Director General Moin-ur-Rehman Khan, is aimed at enhancing the efficiency of water distribution, supervision, and regulation across the coastal city.
According to the new plan, Gwadar has been split into North and South zones. The North Zone will encompass the Old Town areas, while the South Zone will extend from Shambay Ismail Ward to Dhor Ghatti. Executive Engineer Muhammad Akbar has been designated as the overall focal person for citywide water distribution, supported by separate officers and field teams assigned to each zone.
To ensure effective management of key infrastructure such as the main transmission line, pumping stations, and dams, Project Director Water Mirjan Baloch has been entrusted with oversight responsibilities. He will be assisted by Assistant Engineer Qambar Baloch and engineers Kamran and Sanaullah. The entire setup will function under the supervision of the GDA Chief Engineer.
Officials confirmed that a formal water section has now been established within GDA to centralize all matters related to water transmission, distribution, quality assurance, and monitoring under a unified system.
Furthermore, GDA has begun preparations to implement a billing system for new water connections. Consumer registration is currently in progress, and residents whose data is not yet on record have been asked to submit their information. Field staff will also carry out ward-level visits to collect the required details to facilitate the introduction of regular monthly billing.
Water supply management was transferred to GDA last year during a severe water shortage in Gwadar. After addressing the immediate crisis through administrative measures, the newly introduced zoning and billing reforms are intended to establish a more sustainable and long-term water management mechanism. The authority has called upon citizens to cooperate fully to ensure the effective implementation of the new system.
