pk-china-user Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Friday presided over a Party leadership meeting to review and coordinate rescue and relief efforts following a devastating mudslide in Gyirong County in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region.
At the start of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee meeting, Xi, who is also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, along with other leaders, observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the disaster, which struck the border port of Gyirong on Wednesday.
The meeting noted that emergency rescue operations have been conducted swiftly, systematically and in a coordinated manner under the strong leadership of the Party Central Committee. Comprehensive efforts are also underway to resettle affected residents and manage the aftermath of the disaster.
The disaster occurred in a high-altitude region characterized by severe cold, steep valleys, unpredictable weather, numerous surrounding glaciers and glacial lakes, and potential geological hazards, creating major challenges for emergency rescue operations.
The meeting stressed that all relevant authorities and departments must take firm and effective measures to advance rescue operations. It emphasized the need to develop search and rescue plans based on scientific assessment and make every possible effort to locate and rescue all missing Chinese and foreign nationals.
The meeting also said that China will provide emergency assistance to the disaster-affected areas in Nepal and carry out international cooperation in rescue efforts.
