China’s Green Technology and FDI Can Help Pakistan Tackle Global Crises: Dr. Abid Suleri

By Tahir Ali

As Pakistan faces economic uncertainty, increasing energy prices, and the global transition away from fossil fuels, Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) and green technology are becoming crucial for the country’s economic stability and sustainable development, said Dr. Abid Q. Suleri, Executive Director of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF).

In an exclusive interview with Gwadar Pro on Tuesday, Dr. Suleri stated that China has consistently remained Pakistan’s most reliable partner by offering support without interfering in domestic affairs or imposing political conditions.

“China has proven that it is the only global power that does not interfere in a country’s internal matters, create political instability, or dictate terms to its allies,” he said.

Chinese investment continues to play a significant role in Pakistan’s economy. During the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, more than 52 percent of Pakistan’s total net FDI originated from China, a trend that has remained consistent over the years.

According to Dr. Suleri, the 75-year relationship between Pakistan and China is now entering a transformative stage marked by industrial cooperation, technological advancement, and business-to-business connectivity under Phase II of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

“This marks a new phase for CPEC-II, promoting business-to-business engagement and cooperation in artificial intelligence, space science, and advanced technologies, with China bringing Pakistan along in these emerging sectors,” he said.

Describing China as the world’s manufacturing hub, Dr. Suleri noted that Pakistan’s inclusion in Chinese supply chains could greatly enhance exports, industrial growth, and employment opportunities.

“China manufactures for the global market. If Pakistan becomes part of Chinese supply chains, it will provide exactly the kind of economic momentum the country needs,” he added.

Dr. Suleri also highlighted the importance of Chinese green technology in light of global energy challenges and international efforts to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.

“China’s green technology is a game changer,” he said. “Following recent global crises, countries are increasingly seeking alternatives to imported fossil fuels, and Pakistan can greatly benefit from Chinese green technology to achieve sustainable development and energy security.”

He concluded by saying that Pakistan-China relations continue to symbolize lasting friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation.
