The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has spent Rs1.9 billion on socio-economic development initiatives in the Mohmand Dam Project area under its Confidence Building Measures (CBMs), aimed at enhancing the quality of life for local communities.
According to WAPDA, Rs4.5 billion has been allocated for 54 development projects identified by the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in consultation with local representatives under the project’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
“So far, Rs1.9 billion has been utilised in Phase-I for the completion of 18 schemes in the project area, covering infrastructure development, drinking water, health, education, sports and electricity,” the authority said in a statement.
WAPDA added that work is currently in progress on several key projects, including the Abazai-Yousuf Baba Road and a drinking water supply scheme for Sappare Mulagori.
The authority further announced that construction on five schools in the Mohmand, Bajaur and Malakand districts will commence soon. These include Government Primary School Shaheed Banda, Government Girls Primary School Shaheed Banda and Government Primary School Daryab Kor in Tehsil Pindyali, as well as Government Girls Primary School Johar in Bajaur and Government Girls Primary School Ghwand in Malakand.
The details were shared during a meeting held to review development schemes being carried out under the CBMs of the Mohmand Dam Project.
WAPDA is developing the Mohmand Dam Project on the Swat River with a water storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet (MAF). Besides water storage, the project is expected to produce 800 MW of low-cost, environmentally friendly hydropower and provide 300 million gallons of water daily to Peshawar for municipal consumption.
