pk-china-user Pakistan’s shift toward environmentally sustainable urban transport received a major boost on Wednesday as Punjab launched a fleet of China-manufactured electric buses in Gujrat, highlighting the growing contribution of Chinese technology to the province’s green mobility initiatives.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy Commissioner Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi, MPA Abdullah Yousaf, and other senior officials. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif formally launched the Green Electric Bus Service via video link, marking the introduction of modern, clean-energy public transportation under the provincial government’s expanding mass transit programme.
In the first phase, 11 China-made electric buses have been deployed on the Gujrat–Mangowal and Gujrat–Daulat Nagar routes. Authorities plan to increase the fleet to 28 buses by September and introduce additional routes to improve connectivity across the district.
The buses are equipped with wheelchair ramps to facilitate travel for elderly passengers and persons with disabilities, promoting inclusive public transport. A flat fare of Rs20 has also been introduced to ensure the service remains affordable for commuters.
The initiative reflects broader Pakistan-China cooperation in clean technology and sustainable urban development, with Chinese manufacturers playing an important role in advancing Pakistan’s transport modernization efforts.
Besides reducing air pollution, the electric bus fleet is expected to lower long-term operating costs, decrease dependence on fossil fuel imports, and support the country’s climate resilience goals. Officials said the planned fleet expansion will improve daily commuting for thousands of residents while encouraging the wider adoption of environmentally friendly public transport across Punjab.
