Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning’s Regular Press Conference on March 31, 2026

China stated that further details will be released in due course regarding the expected exchange of views between the two foreign ministers on the situation in Iran and other regional and international issues of shared concern, urging media to stay updated.

Responding to a question from China Central Television about reports that a Self-Defense Forces officer who attempted to break into the Chinese embassy in Japan with a knife has been referred to prosecutors, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the incident reflects the dangerous consequences of right-wing ideology and distorted historical narratives in Japan.

She pointed out that Japan’s National Defense Academy reportedly organizes annual group visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, a site often associated with controversy over Japan’s wartime history. She also noted that in 2024, a former senior officer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force became the shrine’s chief priest for the first time.

Mao further alleged that the Self-Defense Forces have, over time, involved individuals with extreme right-wing views in teaching roles and used materials that distort or downplay Japan’s actions during World War II.

Referring to statements by the officer’s parents, who said they had not observed any radical behavior before his military training, Mao questioned what kind of ideology and instruction he may have been exposed to during his nine months of training with the Self-Defense Forces. She stressed that these concerns warrant deeper investigation and reflection.

Mao Ning urged the international community to remain vigilant regarding what she described as a shift toward right-wing tendencies and remilitarization in Japan. She also called on the Japanese authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and address its root causes.
